How do I assign a new variable to a split list?

I tried to go through the .split and .join tutorial but I can't seem to figure out how to assign a new variable to a list that has been split

banana.py
available = "banana split;hot fudge;cherry;malted;black and white"
available.split(";") =

Disregard, I answered my own question. I had to add the variable in front of the '='. For the exercise sundaes = available.split(';')
