JavaScript jQuery Basics (2014) Creating a Simple Lightbox Adding New Attribute Values with attr()

How do i start the code challenge on adding attributes with variables?

Here is my code

var target;

$(example).attr(target, "_blank");
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
  <link rel="stylesheet" href="css/style.css" type="text/css" media="screen" title="no title" charset="utf-8">
  <title>Links Page</title>
</head>
<body>
  <h1>Links</h1>
  <ul>
    <li><a href="http://google.com" class="external">Google</a></li>
    <li><a href="http://yahoo.com" class="external">Yahoo</a></li>
  </ul>
  <script src="//code.jquery.com/jquery-1.11.0.min.js" type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"></script>
  <script src="js/app.js" type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"></script>
</body>
</html>

I honestly don't understand what is happening here. I re watched the videos several times and I do not know what it wants me to do.

Hi Andrew, You have most of it correct except for selecting the external class at the beginning and using quotes around it. Also add quotes around target, declaring target as a variable is not needed as that is the attribute name.

$(".external").attr("target","_blank");

Ahhh... I see. Thank you.
