How do we update a specific object?

The save method returns the object id which is being newly added, in this video, Chris only updated the new object. What if we want to update an object which id is 2 or 3, is there only other design to update it rather than just type 2 or 3 in findContactById () method? And if the solution is simply typing 1,2,3 in findContactById() method, then I don't know why we would need return int id in save().
