How to get more projects as a freelancer?

I started teaching myself coding from scratch since March, and only projects I did so far was my personal website www.majidmokhtari.com and a website for a local hair salon. I have had a lot of interviews with recruiters, unfortunately they all have nicely rejected me, mostly due to not having enough corporate experiences. However they all complimented me and were impressed by my progress.

Now I have come to a point that I think I need to do some marketing and make more website to show off my skills. Somebody recommended me to go to websites like www.odesk.com and start doing small projects and get paid by employers around the world. has anybody heard of this website?Any idea?

Any thoughts on what I should do right now to make more noise and get more projects?

I think those pages can be helpful but I prefer to work to people in my city (or country); talk to people, print some business cards and thinking about what kind of business I want to work to, then trying to network and let people know my work, my services and my skills. I prefer that because the market I really know is where I live and I know that I can design something according to that instead of trying to create a solution for someone in... I don't know, Egypt. I always keep in mind that Design (graphic design, web design, industrial design, etc...) it's all about communication and I know that I can communicate better in an environment that I know really well.

Sorry about my English :)

Thanks Juan that was helpful.

I'm not really sure your coding area but there are websites like Codetraige.com that will allow you to contribute to projects that need help.

From a more design approach you can always check reddit to see if you could work with someone on one of their projects. If you look around there I think you will find a subreddit that people will be posting looking for design people to help them create something.

I feel your pain, getting the ball rolling in the freelance world can be difficult. Are you looking to freelance for experience and income or just experience? If you're looking to build your portfolio and are willing to do some pro bono work I would talk to local non-profits. They have tight budgets and are always excited when a creative individual wants to volunteer some time. Having your name attached to a pro bono project for a non-profit could result in more people becoming aware of your skills and generate some paid leads.

Best of luck.

Josiah thanks for the comment. No I am only looking for experience right now and and to put them on portfolio. That would be great if you can find some projects for me. That would be a huge help

Good day Majid,

I know of a small community college in North Carolina who is looking for some help in making their current website responsive. The site is: http://www.montgomery.edu/. Let me know if you're interested, and I'll do an email introduction.

Thanks
