How well does the Android Studio emulator work for making apps compatible with the different versions of Android?

I personally have a tablet that runs Android 4.4 but wonder how well the IDE works for developing apps for different versions of Android.

Can I be confident that someone else's device that runs a different version of Android will run my apps without trouble, because it ran well on Android Studio?

Like anything else in programming, it's down to whether you tell it. When you're first setting up a new project one of the things your asked is "Minimum SDK". Look through the options. You get to choose which versions you want your app to run on. The trade off is you won't be able to use some of the newer features if you target older versions.
