I added some helpful hints and checks and avoided the extra message variable by using another if else for the final msg

const main = document.querySelector('main');
const randomNumber = getRandomNumber(10);
let counter = 1;
let guess = prompt("I'm thinking of a number between 1 and 10. What is it?");
let message;
function getRandomNumber(upper) {
  return Math.floor( Math.random() * upper ) + 1;
}

do {
  if ( parseInt(guess) < randomNumber) {
    guess = prompt(`Sorry ${guess} is too low, try again.`);
    counter++;
  } else if ( parseInt(guess) > randomNumber ){
    guess = prompt(`Sorry ${guess} is too high, try again.`);
    counter++;
  }  else if (parseInt(guess) === randomNumber) {
      break;
  }
} while ( counter < 10 );

if (parseInt(guess) === randomNumber) {
  main.innerHTML += `<h1>Congratulations, in ${counter} guesses, you guessed correctly that the number was ${randomNumber}!</h1>`;
} else {
  main.innerHTML += `<h1>Sorry, after ${counter} guesses, you failed to guess that the correct number was ${randomNumber}</h1>`;
};
