I believe I'm trying to concatenate this line of code. Should I not be adding them?

Is this a syntax error?

app.js
var id = "23188xtr";
var lastName = "Smith";

var userName = id.toUpperCase() + "#" + lastname.toUpperCase();
index.html
<!DOCTYPE HTML>
<html>
<head>
  <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8">
  <title>JavaScript Basics</title>
</head>
<body>
<script src="app.js"></script>
</body>
</html>
