I'll admit at first I was a little confused but after replaying "Multidimensional Array" video, helped a lot. Around the 3:55 mark she shows other formatting options to handle multidimensional arrays as well as short array syntax.

So for task 1 of 3, it should look something like this:

//edit this array
$contacts[] = [
  "name" => "Alena Holligan"
];

$contacts[] = [
  "name" => "Dave McFarland"
];

$contacts[] = [
  "name" => "Treasure Porth"
]; 

$contacts[] = [
  "name" => "Andrew Chalkley"
];

Each time we use "$contacts[]=", we are assigning an element or for this challenge an array, which are the arrays that this this Challenge is asking us to add to the $contacts array.
