JavaScript JavaScript Basics (Retired) Storing and Tracking Information with Variables Using String Methods

I don't know what it's asking me exactly

We haven't went over the # symbol yet but it's asking me to use it to complete the userName string. Anything I've added to the string just makes task 1 incorrect (according to the browser)

app.js
var id = "23188xtr";
var lastName = "Smith";

var userName = (id.toUpperCase());
index.html
<!DOCTYPE HTML>
<html>
<head>
  <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8">
  <title>JavaScript Basics</title>
</head>
<body>
<script src="app.js"></script>
</body>
</html>

it wants the console to say the id+lastName in caps with no spaces in the middle just a # inbetween them.

The instructions are just asking you to add the "#" as part of the string. It's not being used as an operator.
