answer = answer.to_i if kind == "number" return answer end

answer is being passed in as a parameter to the parse_answer method:

def parse_answer(answer, kind="string")

So you don't need to call gets. Your other code looks good, so just delete this line and the challenge should pass:

answer  = gets.chomp
