28,888 PointsDoruk, in terms of why you're getting the "can't find the _blank attr" error message, that's because you need to pass in _blank as a string. Right now it's looking for the value of a _blank variable since there are no quotes.
$('.external').attr("target", "_blank");

11,204 PointsYour jQuery selector is looking for an anchor element within another element that has a class of 'external'. If you are looking to add an attribute to the anchor element you should be able to just target this by doing:
$(".external").attr("target", _blank);
