My best advice is to try and find some projects that you can work on that have practical value to yourself, your friends/acquaintences, or your family. You may have to create these opportunities yourself.

For example, you could make yourself a portfolio website to show off your projects as you work on them. You could then try talking to people you know about the things you've been learning or working on, and maybe they will mention a project they could use help with that involves web design.

I've worked and consulted with a handful of friends and family members on blog and small business websites. Your new skills are certainly in demand, but it takes a different kind of work to identify them. Make sure you are clear and honest with others; be sure to set appropriate expectations for your skill level, how fast you can work, and that you are still learning. Let your contacts know what you want in exchange for your work too, such as permission to reference their site on your portfolio.

I hope that helps to point you in the right direction!
