I placed the copyright information inside a <small> element, is this semantically correct?

I though that placing disclaimers, legal text or copyright information inside <small> elements would be the way to go.

Ripped from the HTML5 Specifications:

Small print typically features disclaimers, caveats, legal restrictions, or copyrights. Small print is also sometimes used for attribution, or for satisfying licensing requirements.

Be sure to nest the <small> inside the <footer> though. That's typically where you'd find copyright info and the likes.

En veel succes mede-Nederlander ;)
