I think the problem is broken. I ran the same function in the shell and it worked as the specs.

Below is the code: def squared(num): try: i = int(num) return (i * i) except ValueError: return (num * 3)

squared.py
# EXAMPLES
# squared(5) would return 25
# squared("2") would return 4
# squared("tim") would return "timtimtim"
def squared(num):
    try:
        i = int(num)
        return (i * i)
    except ValueError:
        return (num * 3)

If the string cannot be converted to a number, it should be multiplied by it's length. Your testing may have worked with a 3-letter string, but what if the string passed in has more (or less) than 3 letters?

Nvm. Read the specs wrong. Code should have been:

def squared(num):
    try:
        i = int(num)
        return (i * i)
    except ValueError:
        return (num * len(num))
