I'd like some feedback on my portfolio.

Hopefully, "critique me" topics are OK; I didn't see a rule against them.

I'm only displaying four projects right now (three of which are just mock-ups/concepts), so I have a long way to go on that front. But whatever tips or criticisms you have, I'd like to hear them. Thank you.

(Oh, and the images may load a bit slowly; they could use some compression.)

Hi Travis, Just a few thoughts, I'll try not to jump around too much:

  1. I like where you're going with your main image (I actually have a concept very similar in mind for my own site) However, I would lighten up your expression a bit. I have a background in photography and consistently find that when photographing men in particular they will raise their jaw in photos. If you like it cool, but I think when looking to create business and give the impression that you are approachable and great for collaborating a more relaxed face and even a hint of a smile (slightly pleasant) look couldn't hurt. I would even pull back the shot a bit to crop around the area between your shoulder and elbow so its a more comfortable shot as opposed to a slightly intense shot. Otherwise I think the use of white space is great and the effecting is nice too.

  2. On both your site, and in your projects I like where your headline fonts choices are going, however I think some of the body font choices could use some work and/or just cleaning up. For example in your Nonesuch example maybe consider a san-serif font for the body text and clean up padding/margins around the images. Otherwise the text creates a tension of its own that distracts from the rest of the layout. I would also reconsider the headline font choice in "Look around - its a beautiful world" Font choices are a constant struggle and can change a project so much.

  3. I really like your use of color, and the combinations you choose for a lot of your projects.

  4. Do you plan on keeping the lightbox functionality of your portfolio pieces or do you plan on adding them as pages? It might be nice to know why you chose to make the decisions you made, or see a little process work or even hear about a solution you created with each piece.

  5. I like the personality that comes out in your form, I would for sure keep playing around with possible headings, maybe something like "lets collaborate" or something. There are a lot of studies about how wording in these sections can create clicks and the best terminology to use. Worth checking out but not really a major thing. Hope some of those suggestions help.

Thanks, Sarah! Just what I was looking for.

  1. Yeah, I agree completely. I thought a serious look would be good, but it's a bit much!
  2. Will do! There's a lot I want to change on the projects still.
  3. Thanks!
  4. I'd like to keep lightbox, but I'd also like to add pages to describe the projects. I'm not sure how to incorporate both just yet. Deciding what kind of portfolio layout works best is trickier than I expected.
  5. I've discovered that projecting my personality while remaining professional and also creating a personal "brand" is very tough. I keep flipping between something very slick and serious & something more playful and edgy. Right now, it's hard to discern what I'm all about based on the site alone.

I have seen some versions of the Lightbox that also offer a link to learn more, I started to play around with one option too (beware this is seriously not in any way complete) on a really old version of my site: sarahjulie.com. I actually am not a fan of the usability in it and abandoned it pretty quickly. I do like the idea that anyone quickly looking at your site can see them through the Lightbox feature, but if they want to dig deeper it might be nice to have it go more in depth. Maybe something just as simple as clicking on the title of the work even. Just a thought - good luck, personal portfolios are the hardest to finish!

It looks really nice. It's bright and displays your work beautifully. I like the font and color you used in the header, it screams NC. The layout of your portfolio looks great. And of course the form at the bottom is perfect. Potential clients have a user friendly form they can submit.

Personally, the only thing I would change is the color in the footer. Perhaps the green color you use in the text logo or header to reinforce your site's theme.

Other than that, it's awesome.

Thanks for checking it out! Do you mean change the footer text or the footer background?

Yes, I think it'll look better. Regardless tho, the site is well designed, so it's obviously not necessary.

Hey Travis, the site looks great to me. It's clean, organized and easy to navigate. There's a couple things I noticed though, the "hire me" button and the "wanna team up?" button sometimes land me on the portfolio section. And when you submit the form, you get a blank page with a link "Back to contact" but when you click on the link, it gives a 404 error page. I'm not sure if you're aware of these issues but I thought I'd bring them to your attention anyways. Good luck!

Thanks. I've noticed that the javascript doesn't always scroll to the intended location, and I have no clue why. It usually works, but once in a while, it doesn't.

The second issue I wasn't aware of; thanks!

Overall, the website looks nice, here are some nit picky things that I found needed change.

  1. I would rather have your whole face in the hero image, and then push the heading text a little to the right. Also if you are looking for clients, a smile goes a long way. There has been a lot of research done in that field and smiling definitely reels in more customers.

  2. The font for the logo, Nav, and Body doesn't work for me. You have such a fancy type in your hero image but your logo is just plain sans-serif. Find a type that truly expresses who you are, and if you can't, have you ever tried taking a font and making it your own? Since "Recent Work" is the title of that section of the page, then why is it so small? You need to make it bigger, and give it more contrast from the background. The use of typography effectively is the norm in web design right now, your hero image does it justice, but let's stay consistent.

  3. I don't feel like you need to have a background color for your footer. Just let it sit at the bottom of the contact page. Also, this is an important place to put social media and other contact information, which many other portfolios include in various spots of the page.

  4. In your mobile version, I would like to see the menu button options centered, and be a little more generous to fat fingers :p That's just my preference though, it's perfectly fine the way it is.

Overall, a well built website. I really like the hero image a lot, I think the way you played the gradient and typography was pretty clever. I would like to see that, more of you, more of your style or so to speak, throughout the page since the rest of the page is just solid colors.

Good Job.

Thanks for your thoughts! I'll keep these things in mind!
