If Domain Purchased through Wordpress.org, is FTP Still needed?

I have a domain purchased through Wordpress, blueorchidthemes.wordpress.com. Do I still need to use the FTP client? If so, where do I find the host name?

Something to make clear, wordpress.com is different than wordpress.org. On wordpress.com, you will not need an ftp client because you do not have that level of access to the servers.

You're options of what can be done on wordpress.com are limited. Even things like plugins that can be used are limited. I never use wordpress.com because of this.

With the wordpress.org version, you download the source code, and than you are responsible to ftp it to a server somewhere else. But because of this, you're able to do whatever, and install whatever you want on your wordpress site. This is always the way I go.

Hello Sally,

It says in the Wordpress documentation that they do not allow FTP access. Check it out: https://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/

Michael,

I saw that, too. So, if I have a wordpress.com domain, I don't need to dowload the software and use the FTP for updates? I wish this had been addressed in the video, or was more clearly defined in the Wordpress documentation. This is my second attempt at the Wordpress track, and I find it very difficult to follow.

Thanks, everyone. I'll have to think about what I want to do next.

Update: I put this lesson in time out for a few days, and am now understanding it much more. Thanks for all the explanations, everyone.
