im not sure what to do next regarding setup of mysql database with xampp control panel?

i have downloaded xampp and after changing the ports being listened to to 8080 and 4433 i cant effectively start both apache and mysql in the control panel. i can also access wordpress by going to localhost:8080 then clicking thru to where i have extracted the downloaded zip file to. it brings me to the beginning of some wordpress stuff asking for language and then for database info username password etc. my problem is i cant access phpmyadmin thru localhost:8080/phpmyadmin. i get a page that says:

Error MySQL said:

Cannot connect: invalid settings. Connection for controluser as defined in your configuration failed. phpMyAdmin tried to connect to the MySQL server, and the server rejected the connection. You should check the host, username and password in your configuration and make sure that they correspond to the information given by the administrator of the MySQL server.

now im definitely completely lost after having gone thru a few different wp courses and having treehouse "encourage" me to create environments multiple ways when ive never set up a local environment before.
