i'm not sure why my answer isn't working

Your code should look like this:

public class ConferenceRegistrationAssistant {

  public int getLineFor(String lastName) {
    /* If the last name is between A thru M send them to line 1
       Otherwise send them to line 2 */
    int line = 0;
    if(lastName.charAt(0) < 'N')
      line = 1;
    else
      line = 2;
    return line;
  }

}

The variable 'line' is initially set to zero then you use an if statement to see if the first letter of their last name is less than 'N' and if it is then set the variable line to 1 otherwise set it to 2; then you return the variable 'line'. Notice that I only used the 'return' keyword one time, at the end of the code.
