10,801 PointsI'm planing to buy a cheap computer, and was wondering if it would be enough
Hi,
So I do web stuff, main front-end things. I focus 100% on the fornt-end part, which means HTML/CSS, Sass, JavaScript and such, sometimes WordPress. At least for the time beeing.
Now, I would probably do some back-end in few months, 2-3, I don't know, but.. Is a computer for like 200pounds, a very cheap one, be okay for this?
id like to edit videos as well probably.
I have 500pounds, but I'm willing to spend 200pounds, since once i start to earn the first thing I'm going to do is a mac.
I can't remember windows well on how it works, so was just wondering. I did think also that a lot of those computers might be slow.. but we are in 2017year almost, and technology is better, so if i get a new one it shoudl be okay i suppose?

Fortunately for us, web developing doesn't require a super powerful computer. Code itself doesn't take much room on a hard drive, it's not hard for even the entry level cpu's to keep up. Ram can be important if you're like me have a whole bunch of tabs and things running at once.
All of that sounded great until you said edit videos. That's a whole nother world, and you do need a pretty powerful computer to pull your hair out trying to do so. Even new $500 US dollar computers would/could struggle editing and rendering video footage. Yes, while hardware gets cheaper/better, video resolution continues to skyrocket, creating a cat and mouse game. It becomes "ohh sweet, your 4 core cpu can process 1440p video no problem? Sweet, let's make 4K mainstream and see how long to you pay up for a 6 core cpu."
Again, not knowing what you can buy, but knowing what you want to buy, I'd recommend no less than a 4 core cpu, and as much ram, and hard drive space as you can afford. I'd max your budget. If you can drop the video editing, you can save money by dropping down to a 2 core cpu, and less hard drive space.
Apple computers are, in my opinion, losing their justification for me. Their hardware specs are terrible, while their prices have skyrocketed. The latest rounds of macbook pros that came out are anything but professional grade hardware, and have left me wanting a whole lot more. If you want a great computer for development, you can build a nice, simple computer and install linux on it, and have a great development environment.

15,539 PointsI picked this one up about three months ago for less then $300 (It looks like $249 comes out to 205 pounds at current exchange rates). It's certainly not top of the line and in fact is a couple of generations old. The plus side of it is that upgrades are incredibly easy, two clips allow you to slide off the back cover and get access to the CPU, memory and hard drive. Unlike most laptops the CPU is socketed so is upgradeable to and i7.
I immediately ditched the windows that was preinstalled and formatted and installed Linux Mint. I do all my Treehouse curriculum, as well as image editing on it (and obviously mindlessly surfing forums!) I also use it for editing videos for my daughter's youtube channel. Nothing fancy in any of that, but it performs flawlessly (other then mint occasionally not finding my wifi router and needing to be rebooted) with the factory hardware.
So yes, you can definitely get by with a 200 pound machine, but I would strongly recommend being mindful of ease of upgradabilty for anything you might want to do down the road.

10,801 PointsOk, thank you :) that's sounds good, see what they got in the shop when i go there. I just need something for now to get on with. I don't have much money, in facts around 410usd total for me, so not that i can get anything good, well, for what i want to do in future, but for now it shoudl be okay I suppose.
That's interesting. I'm going need to install Linux or something, I think lol

10,801 PointsMeh, pretty a lot to take in. Since you mentioned about macs.. I don't know what to think my self. I kinda forgot about few things on this already on how it works, the components. I just need to get throw the times im going now, need to buy a computer in a week or two, as tomorrow I'm not going to have anything.
I don't want to spend much on this, because I know I don't have much money, and the plan is to get some cheap computer, and once i start earning save up then for something good.
Though, I wanted to do vidoes, I suppose I don't need to edit them at first, or if i could edit something, or maybe just cut some scenes, that shoudl be ok. Though, i don't evne have a phone, so I don't know if im going to record any vidoes in first place.
I'll take that in my thoughs, on what you said about the RAM and such, I keep soo many stuff open, for refference, if that's foundaton framework, treehouse example code, my old project example code, 30different tabs, skype lol in the past on windows i used to use the computer had serious issues me doing this, in general, i had bad experiences with this, so I'm afraid to not buy some crap and then wait for the browser to reload 10sec, because if i was going to test something line by line.. oh gosh, not worth my time.
I actually have 1.6k of PLN, as id be buying it in Poland, which is 335pounds, lucky me lol , or around 410 dollars. See what the shop has to offer lol I'm not going to have an internet or anything, so i'm going to need to buy one there. I just need to get over with this.
I think i skip the video stuff, though one answer said that the person can edit simple stuff i think, so that shoudl e ok, not that i know much on how to edit in the first place, so i shodun't do anything facny apart from cuts and scene managing, just because when i speak i might stop and think about something lol
I'm going to aim at that, max RAM, a good CPU and hard drive. I suppose that shall be enough lol I jsut have bad experiences with this.. and i can't afford to have a crap computer now that will take me 10sec to reload a page.
