I'm using date('F d\, Y'); The preview shows "Today is November 04, 2017" But this is not being accepted...

Try this: echo date('F d, Y');

With no backslash after "d".

the backlash behind your d, makes it unvalid string parameter.

//----------change to
echo date('F d, Y');
