1,437 PointsImprovements to Tracks
Hi there!
We’ve been working hard behind the scenes on some exciting changes to learning within the Treehouse app to ensure you're provided with the best possible technology education and learning experience. Starting today, you’ll see those changes take effect as we introduce improvements to the Tracks experience.
Here's what's changed:
- Home has now been improved to prominently feature a much richer snapshot view of your current Track. You’ll be able to see exactly where you are in your Track down to the current step, at-a-glance, and all without leaving Home.
- We've added the ability to collapse your Points card for better visibility of your Track and/or other projects, as well as a tooltip tour to better acclimate you to your new Home.
- The Tracks page now features cards with more useful information about each Track, as well as options to join/switch to a new Track without having to bounce around to each individual Track page.
- Most importantly, you’ll now be focused on one Track at a time, and some Tracks may now have new, more appropriate names. Based on your previous learning at Treehouse, we’ve automatically migrated you over to one of these new Tracks and you can continue learning as you were. If you want to focus on something else, you can switch your Track on the Tracks page. Tracks haven’t affected your profile and progress up till now, so your points and badges are still intact and will continue to grow as you’re learning.
We hope you enjoy the improvements we’ve made to Tracks, and if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Happy Learning! :)
Update: We've fixed all the bugs reported here, and we've also added a completed state to the Track cards on the Tracks page that adds a checkmark icon and a "Review Track" button to any Tracks that you have previously completed. Hope that helps!

1,437 PointsChris, I believe that is by design. Not all your points will be earned by doing Tracks.

Travis Mullen
14,544 PointsMy rails development track seems to be way out of order. It has Build a Simple Website followed by Building Social features in Ruby on Rails. That seems like quite a leap since it references adding features to something that I haven't started working on yet. I'm a bit confused as to the order in which to proceed at this point.

8,058 PointsSeriously. It has made all the difference. I actually canceled my subscription after a few months, not because of content but because of the overall experience. Now I've resigned up and would recommend Treehouse to anyone,

Daniel Lewis
1,437 PointsGreat to hear it, Tedd! We're definitely working hard to give you all a better user experience as well as better tools to make learning simpler/faster. There's some really fantastic stuff in the works, so stay tuned!

Tedd Arcuri
8,058 PointsAwesome, I'll definitely be sticking around for awhile this time ;) Can only hope you guys have some Python courses planned for the future!

29,082 PointsI'm working on the Rails track now, and I'm pretty confused about how the sections have been re-ordered. I was working on CSS after HTML, which makes sense. But now it wants me to build social features in Rails, then learn what Rails is. Then jQuery comes before Javascript, and CSS comes before HTML. It just doesn't seem to make any sense at all.

Travis Mullen
14,544 PointsI just posted about the same thing! Super confusing, right?

Travis Mullen
14,544 PointsI just posted about the same thing! Super confusing, right? I'm going to switch to the Web Design track since it's almost the same order that the rails one had you going in anyways, plus a couple of extras.

Adam Kelm
29,082 PointsI'm glad I'm not the only one! I'm betting this is a bug that just needs to be worked out, because it makes super no sense at all.

Treehouse Guest TeacherHey guys, I'm looking into this right now - sorry for the trouble! Definitely not intentional that things be out of order like that.

Randy Wang
9,291 PointsI'm having the exact same issue. I liked the flow of the "Become a web developer" track (just completed the CSS section), but I'm now on the Rails track which is a bit confusing.

Miguel Wood
10,334 PointsPrior to the improvements being introduced when a track was finished a 'Completed' heading was visible in the dashboard. It has since been removed. Any chance of bringing this back?

Tommy Morgan
Treehouse Guest TeacherHey Miguel Wood:
Part of the point of this iteration was to focus students on their current Track, which means that we eliminated the "show every Track you've ever been on" aspect of your Home page so that we could show you the new focused Track snapshot view.
That said, let me mention two things:
1) You can visit our Tracks page (click the map icon in the sidebar, or visit http://teamtreehouse.com/tracks) to see all of our Tracks - the ones that you've completed will be marked as such there.
2) We still have a lot of work we want to do on Tracks, so this isn't a finished product by any means - this request (and any other feedback/requests anyone else would like to provide) will be reviewed by the team working on the next round of Tracks updates. We're making these changes to try to make Tracks more useful to our students, so how you all respond to these changes is going to be an important part of our considerations moving forward :)

Vishay Bhatia
1,293 PointsGuys please fix the PHP Development track please. It is completely out of whack and has placed "Using PHP with MYSQL" over "Build a Simple PHP Application"

Tommy Morgan
Treehouse Guest TeacherSorry about the PHP Track, folks, that was entirely my fault. When Travis and Adam posted that the Rails Development Track was out of order earlier, I did a sweep of all the other Tracks to make sure there hadn't been any other migration errors... and apparently I accidentally skipped PHP :(
It should be fixed now. Sorry for the trouble!

Daniel Lewis
1,437 PointsI might be wrong about this, but I believe the old Become a Web Developer Track is more similar to the new Rails Development Track than the new Web Development Track. The new Web Development Track is now instead more appropriately named, and focuses on front-end web development (emphasis on Javascript); we have broken out back-end development into Rails Development and PHP Development.

Nicole Vest
14,716 PointsI like the new layout of the tracks, however really enjoyed the freedom of being able to skip around my track. Now I am almost finished with JavaScript Foundations, but I am locked out unless I search for it in the library. I also enjoyed working on the design workshops and deep dives when I was tired of learning code. Now switching around is much more difficult. I know skipping around tracks is probably not recommended, but I learn best that way, and it made learning from treehouse much more exciting for me.

Daniel Lewis
1,437 PointsNicole,
This is an old thread, but I still got your comment! So to address that, we definitely feel like Tracks should be a guided, hand-holding process and in order for us to really enforce the order of curriculum that we feel is best for learning that particular content, we needed to place content into tiers or levels, if you will. That said, if you do a course out of order using the Library while you are also on a Track, you will receive credit for that course in your Track! Hope that helps!

Patrick Mangan
6,444 PointsHey Daniel,
There's been a couple threads on this topic, but I figured I would post here since you responded.
I definitely agree with you that a more guided approach is beneficial to the learning experience here at Treehouse. The new layout looks great and organizes the content more logically, which is really helpful. The criticism that myself and some others have had, is one of convenience.
Having to switch back and forth between Tracks and the Library doesn't really seem to serve a purpose. When I want to check out a future lesson referenced in one of the video instructions, I now have to leave and go search for it in the library rather than simply clicking on the lesson in my track.
Additionally, when new content is added at the beginning of a Track, it locks you out of your current section. For example, I started Treehouse in January and I'm almost finished with CSS Foundations. In February, the 'How to Make a Website' deep dive was added. Now with the new Track system, I'm locked out of CSS Foundations until I go back and complete this entire new section. I understand that I can still access everything through the Library, but the whole process just seems less intuitive.
Ultimately this isn't a huge issue, but I wanted to explain from a user's perspective, why this lock-out structure is a little annoying.
Thanks!

Kyle Meyer
5,459 PointsPatrick — we just released an update that unlocks content in your Track that you've previously started or completed. Hope this helps!

Daniel Lewis
1,437 PointsPatrick - it sounds like what you want is to be able to create your own playlist of sorts, for the content you want to consume and not necessarily how we want you to consume it? If so, we're working on something, but it will not be a part of Tracks. Tracks are a focused, on-rails way to progress through our curriculum, but we definitely want to add some flexibility to the Library for those students that Tracks don't suit well. Thanks for the feedback, and for being a student!

Patrick Mangan
6,444 PointsThanks Kyle and Dan. The new changes definitely help. Much appreciated!

Nicole Vest
14,716 PointsThank you for your quick response, Daniel!

6,988 PointsI don't like the new Track... I can't see the video that I was following because I haven't saw the first Intro Step!

Andy Palatka
10,166 PointsI also wanted to say I'm not a fan of the new track layout. I understand providing structure but, there's being helpful and then there's just being parental. There is some great information our your site that would fill in holes in my education but I don't want to always having to go over things I'm already knowledgeable in. Good to know I can use the library to still skip around but this design feel like a step in the wrong direction.

Daniel Lewis
1,437 PointsAndy, appreciate your feedback, think we've addressed it all here: https://teamtreehouse.com/forum/tracks-reimagined (see Update 2).

tofful
6,988 PointsAgreed with Andy, and also I want to add, why we can't click on the steps in grey? I don't want to follow and complete all steps if I only want to see the middle one for example.

Daniel Lewis
1,437 PointsAnita Mercado I have to ask, why are you using Tracks? The purpose of Tracks is to be a guided path, not a general curriculum guide for you to pick and choose what you want to do. I think that is definitely a usecase, but it is an incorrect one. We are thinking about implementing some kind of queue/playlist functionality for the Library, however. That seems to be what you're looking for?

Andy Palatka
10,166 PointsThanks for the response Daniel. Good to know you guys are making lessons easier to get to. Still I fell it's a mistake to lock lessons. For me it's a matter of consistency. If I see a section is locked, I'm going to assume it's locked everywhere. In fact if I hadn't read it in the comments I would never had known about the library workaround. I think something as simple as an alert saying "are you sure you learn this lesson out of order?" would be enough to coax students along.

Christian Georg Strobl
27,656 Pointswow! it really improved a lot...on the weekend, will continue :) great job! keep up this great work

6,795 PointsDaniel Lewis - Sorry to post in an old thread, but you guys didn't offer a feedback link in the email. I kind of dig the new track layout, but it would be better to see that we've already completed a part of it, even if that was greyed out while we were focusing on the direction you would want us to go on.
You guys have made changes (adding/subtracting stages) to the tracks a bit in the past (for example, the Wordpress track used to have a lot more in it), so locking us out of things we're currently working on because it doesn't fit your curriculum is a bit annoying. Especially since in some vids, the instructor suggests "If you don't know what's going on here, I suggest you take a look at some of the other more in depth stages on TH".
One other thing - does the time estimate refer to the stage I'm currently working on or the entire track? Does it take into account the quizzes, or is it basically adding the times up from the vids?
Thanks!

Kyle Meyer
5,459 PointsHey Jon, you're totally right. We just released an update that unlocks individual courses you already have progress in within your Track, even if you haven't unlocked that level yet. We also updated Home to include any courses you're working on that may be a part of your Track but aren't unlocked yet. We hope these two changes make it easier to continue your progress on our site. : )
As for the scheduling question, the time estimates take into account your current progress and are based on average completion times for all of the content that makes up a course—videos, quizzes, and code challenges. These are definitely estimates; you may find you complete things either more quickly or quite a bit slower than the estimate, and that's okay.

Jeffrey Wambugu
8,548 PointsThe new layout is really awesome but there should be a difference in colour for the development tracks and tracks that are not done they both have the same grey colour. (Please disregard this statement if they are different I may be colour blind :p).

Daniel Lewis
1,437 PointsIt's actually a different color completely, but I can see why it's confusing (I had the same thought a few weeks ago). We'll look into maybe changing the color of Dev Tools. Not super high priority though :)

Andrew Birnie
2,151 PointsI like the new tracks layout and UX, except now I can't look ahead at future modules. For example, I'm in the CSS deep dive now, but I wanted to get a quick peak at what we'll be doing in Aesthetic Foundations. Before the change, I could explore each module, but I can't now. Am I missing something?
