In the html why do we add the clearfix class to the div with the class "container" ?

In the html we add the clearfix class to the div with the class "container". Why do we not add it to the header with the class "main-header". I tried that and it seems to work fine. What is the difference?

I think it depends whether you are floating any elements. As div's are block elements, they will sit under each other anyway. So adding the clear-fix to the header when there are no floating elements is impractical.
