General Discussion

Introduction and some quick questions.

Hello everyone! So I'm one of the newer people here on this site, I've got a gold account as of right now.

I'm a dude at the age of 19. My biggest dream right now is to become an independent iOS app developer and hence why I did register on this site. But while I've done my research, It would be nice with some feedback from others using this site as well as perhaps even from those who run Treehouse.

As of right now I'm not working nor studying as I just finished my last year.
And seeing as that is the case, I've now got all the time in the world, I can spend everything from 3 hours to 8 hours a day learning now.

I have no past experiences with coding so I am starting with blank sheets here.

What I wish to know is, can I go from being a complete and utter noob to being an independent iOS developer using this site?

And seeing as I wish to create apps for the iPhone, what would you start with? I know there's Swift coming up probably a while after the summer but I don't want to wait for that.

If any of you could perhaps make a little list as to what I should start with that would help me out a lot!

F.example 1. Cocoa Touch 2. Objective-C 3. Swift in that sense if you get it.

Apologize in advance for the English, I'm Norwegian so it is not my first language.

I think you should start with the IOS track because it guides you to what you need to know to become an IOS developer and it teaches you the basics first :) Thats what I did and now i'm making my own app!! So Try the IOS track first! :)

because the track goes basically: --> Basics of C & Obj C --> Simple App (where u learn ALOT!) --> Blog Reader (where u learn about NSURL and more :) ) --> Ribbit App --> Core data app (shows you the basics of core data) --> Photo browser app (The best one so far i think :D and teaches u bout cocapods and Api's and more its so much fun!!) --> Ribbet part 2 (i think! i haven't done this one yet!!)

hope this helps!! and btw i am only 15! and I've done all of this so i am sure u can! :D and Goodluck!!

Welcome to Treehouse. It's great a really good place to start coding and building your skill set. Majority of the treehouse courses are intended for beginners to help get their feet wet with programming.

This is only my opinion but starting off I would first complete the Front-End development track of treehouse, because it will give you the fundamentals of programming. You'll have a basic understanding of html, css, javascript, git, console, jquery, etc. Then I would take the iOS course.

However, if you are only interested in learning iOS then I would complete the iOS track then review any other courses within the treehouse library that covers iOS. Even though Swift is brand new, I would begin learning Objective-C and Git. For an intro to Swift go to Apple.com and take the intro to Swift tutorial.

Once you get to a point where you are comfortable then I would start exploring the web for simple iOS projects you can replicate. There are multiple MOOC similar to treehouse that can help speed up the iOS learning curve.

If you want to get good at this sooner rather than later, I would put in at least 5-8 hours a day for the next 6-12 months. Then you'll be a star.

Hope this helps. Good Luck

Wow, thanks a lot! And 15 huh? You've got a bright future ahead of you then! I should've started back then as well but I didn't really discover the market for apps until recently.

I'll do as you suggested here mate!

@caleb Man, I'm happy I chose to subscribe to the Treehouse community because you guys are really helpful. Looking forward to being a part of this community. Thanks for the tips as well! I imagine I'll get some more responses later on which I am happy for!

And I can for sure put in 5-8 hours a day for the next 6-12 months. I've got the time and there's not much that I have planned anyway so I think I'd be able to manage to do that! Motivation is on top as well!

haha! Thanks :) i hope so!! :D I spend at least 3 hours a day bc of school at at weekends at leaf 5-6 hours :)
