"AJAX" is a technique, but the XMLHttpRequest object used to implement it is built-in to the JavaScript engine in all modern browsers (except for Opera Mini). It does not need to be separately loaded before use.

However, the jQuery functions do make it quite a bit easier to use than the native facility.
