Is it normal to finish a track longer than you're supposed to?

Hi,

i just joined treehouse recently, but i realised that i'm progressing much slower than the estimation time at right-end of the course. I've been learning web design, on how to make a website. It says 8 hours on the course, but i've put about roughly 14+ hours doing them and it's only 4/5 done.

So do other people experience this?

forgive me, it just feels like i'm not putting enough attention or effort, and there's something wrong. It's discouraging

Some courses do take longer than the estimates say, yes. Some, thankfully, go more quickly so it does level out.

Don't be discouraged, especially at the beginning as things do take a while to sink in. Once you've done a few more courses, you'll begin to benefit from some 'repetition' and already have a good grasp of the topic being covered. That way, you'll be getting ahead of the time estimates.

I'd disregard the times given and use them as a way of ranking the courses against each other rather than being an accurate representation of the time it'll take you. We're all different!

Keep it up - you'll be fine.

Steve.

I would view the time estimates as just that estimates. In the end its about know the HTML, CSS, JS, PHP whatever more so than doing the course in an allotted time span. I wouldn't worry about it. I agree with Hunter's advice. Keep it up and you'll do fine.

I have just finished the android track and it did take a lot longer than the estimated time. But I wouldn't rush to get through things I would say go at your own pace and make sure you understand the concept what is being explained in the video before moving on. After all there's no point whizzing through a track if at the end you don't remember or understand anything.

If the time estimates are based on video length + some amount of time per quiz + some amount of time per code challenge, then yes, it could vary a lot.

If you're putting time into understanding the material - practicing/coding/drawing in illustrator, etc - then you may go well over.

Though I don't know if that's how they calculate the estimates.
