1,463 PointsIs taking notes okay?
I originally was learning programming on a site called codecademy.com and I really enjoyed it, the classes were way smaller and taught less then Treehouse but it was a good starting site. But because they were small it didn't take me long to move from one language to the other. And after I was finished with a language I would think back the my classes before it and not remember a thing. If I learned Javascript and then took a Ruby class suddenly half of my Javascript knowledge was gone. So when I signed up at Treehouse I immediately took up note taking. I now have over 25 pages of Python notes and 16 Swift, those are just the biggest ones. But when I was doing these in my study hall at school someone said that I shouldn't be taking programming notes because I am supposed to memorize all this stuff and taking notes won't be good for me. Is note taking bad for these classes? Any feedback appreciated thank you!

Courses Plus Student 6,497 PointsI take notes. But I use it mostly for the challenges. I also use it to help me understand coding better & make it stick in my brain better. For the most part nowadays you can just search for anything you need so theres no need to remember everything. But if you see some cool code that you think you might want to do on another site, write it down. Write down the basics & rules. Dont be afraid to take notes....its still going to be hard to remember it all. Whatever your learning style is & whatever works for you, just do it! : )

Full Stack JavaScript Techdegree Student 21,416 PointsThere is nothing wrong with taking notes. It depends from person to person how they learn. Taking notes help me stick things to my head.

352 PointsIt all depends how you learn . Some people take notes (myself included) and other have the ability to remember things on the fly. Depends on how you learn.

28,695 PointsNote taking can be a barrier to progress if it takes too long (or makes the task 60% wordprocessing). At uni, i found it more useful to try and understand the material than take exhaustive notes. And notes can be unwieldy (i try to make notes searchable). So it's not take notes or take no notes - there are options in terms of how to take notes (everything, just the important concepts and gotchas). As others have suggested, it can vary person to person.
