Is there a way, without resizing, that I can get images to display exactly the way they do in this section?

I just started to replace the top two photos (1. Experimentation with color and texture and 2. Playing with blending modes in Photoshop) with two images that are sized differently.

It appears that the width remained uniform, but the height didn't, so the second image (the top one of the right column) extends further vertically than the first image (the top one of the left column), but the padding (or is it margin in this case?) above the second two images remained the same, which is good.

How can I get any image, regardless of size, to fit in place of the five pictures used in the example, without resizing? Thanks!
