3,417 PointsIs this still necessary with css3 cant you just add a mobile friendly menu that way?
I learned how to do this with bootstrap css so what is the benefit of using jquery for this functionality?

2,544 PointsBootstrap uses jQuery to work the menu. It's hidden by default on mobile, however there's a bit of jQuery in place, so when you click the toggle nav button/link, it opens the menu.
See http://getbootstrap.com/components/#navbar it explain that without the Bootstrap JavaScript, the menu won't expand.
So in answer to your question, you can add the mobile friendly navbar styles, but the displaying and hiding of the navbar is controlled with JavaScript/jQuery.

14,681 PointsBootstrap is a great way to get this feature on your website, but I think it's worth learning how to do it from scratch as well. It could help down the line when you are troubleshooting in bootstrap or if you decide to build pages without bootstrap.

Do you have code we can look at for reference? I don't think you're going to get the answers you seek without a little bit more context available.
