PHP Using Cookies and JWTs for Secure Authentication Cookies Cookies vs Session Storage

Isn't session id stored in cookie?

Wouldn't it be easier to make php store session-id cookie with the secure and http only flags rather than storing entirely new cookie?

Also this would have benefit of having the ability to invalidate session when ever we want as opposed to waiting for token expiration.
