Issues validating the HTML

I have tried validating my code on the W3C validator, but it keeps reporting an error where my Google font was imported. Not sure what I should be doing to correct this.

Error Message:

Line 7, Column 142: Bad value http://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Changa+One|Open+Sans:400italic,700italic,400,700,800 for attribute href on element link: Illegal character in query: not a URL code point.

The issue is with the Google Web Font URL.

The | character is invalid in a URL, so to encode the | character change it to %7c

Could you insert/link the exact error message?

'''html <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <meta charset="utf-8"> <title>Eric Huffman | Developer</title> <link rel="stylesheet" href="css/normalize.css"> <link href='http://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Changa+One|Open+Sans:400italic,700italic,400,700,800' rel='stylesheet' type='text/css'> <link rel="stylesheet" href="css/main.css"> <link rel="stylesheet" href="css/responsive.css"> <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0"> </head> '''

Try posting your markup here for us to get a better idea of what may be going wrong.

the text after the doctype tag needs to be enclosed in a tag. Do you want it to be viewable on the page? If so, put it in <body>. If not, is it meta data? wrap it in <meta></meta> tags. I'm guessing that error message is because in your markup you don't have the link enclosed in a <link> tag.

I think I'm having an issue posting the actual bit of markup that was giving me trouble, but thank you. I think I may have spotted the issue. Appreciate it.

basic structure for html should be as follows:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
    <title></title>
</head>
<body>

</body>
</html>

What you're showing is text that isn't wrapped in tags. That doesn't make sense to browsers. Does that make sense?

Yes, that makes sense. Thank you
