I think it is the way I'm writing the return statement. I've tried many ways and can't get it right.
def first_4(data):
return data[:4]
def first_and_last_4(data):
return data[:4], data[-4:]

first_and_last_4("12345678")
returns
('1234', '5678')
whereas you are asked to return a single value. Try concatenation.
def first_and_last_4(data):
return data[:4] + data[-4:]
