Hey Folks!
I have my first interview in the field coming up soon for this Java Dev. position: http://www.tpgnyc.com/java-developer-1539/
My friend who manages tech recruiting for Intel advised that I should start the negotiation high around 70k - 80k / yr. I used payscale to check the median in my local area: http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Java_Developer/Salary/493c6073/Entry-Level-New-York-NY
Is the 70k / yr average (listed on the Java Track) reasonable to ask for?
Thanks! :)

12,842 PointsYou can check a few other websites like O*NET to get some more ideas of the general salary range of a Java Developer...this is O*NET's "Computer Programmer" area: http://www.onetonline.org/link/summary/15-1131.00?redir=15-1021.00 Scroll all the way down to salary by state and click on that. O*NET has ties to state labor information.
Another way to scout the local market is to look at job boards that have salary postings and use a few of those data points to see if you see an average.
I know the cost of living in NYC. It's horrible. If you're not from NYC and are thinking about living there consider looking at sites like this: https://www.expatistan.com/cost-of-living/new-york-city that show you how much it'll cost to live in NYC.
$70k is about $34.31 an hour. It'll take you 2.5 weeks to cover your rent in an apartment in NYC alone without other cost of living considerations like gas, food, health insurance, car payments, and utilities.
