10,174 PointsJob Seeking: Code Samples
So when I am applying for work I always get asked for code samples. I can write nearly anything, I think that is the problem, and can never think of what to write.
What is a good example of something innovative or interesting to send in with say PHP, and JavaScript. I don't want to just send a bunch of getters/setters but I don't want to write an entire Application either.
Any and all suggestions I am all for it.

10,174 PointsI had not considered that, would they not want to see the content as well or just send them the Theme when finished. I suppose they would really be more interested in if I followed the naming conventions for Wordpress files like front-page.php, and coded it correctly than they would the actual content of the site. Thanks.

13,798 PointsYeah! Also, make it a repository on GIthub. They can see your code and the product, which can be samples of your other work (the content) if any.Maybe you could make sample place holder content. Or code a custom theme for a less savy friend.

Courses Plus Student 99 PointsOne idea is to take a look at the company's website and make a one-page web site that is a take-off on their site. For example, if you were applying to GE you could make an icon that says CS (your initials) but in the color and font that GE's logo uses. Then build a one-pager that uses the logo, and maybe use JavaScript to hide and show fields that would be relevant to their business.
That approach helped me to get a job. It was a good ice-breaker because it was kind of funny, and it showed I cared enough about the company to customize something for them.
Good luck.

17,730 Pointsyou can also look at sites like Freelancer.com and see what PHP jobs people are asking for. Don't bother to actually bid on a job unless you want to work for $5/hr, but just find a job that looks interesting and do it on your own for you portfolio. Most of them are pretty regular real world needs.
