I dont know what went wrong with the solution I wrote -

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
    <h2>Student List</h2>

    <ul class="student-list">
        <li>James McAvoy</li>
        <li>Alena Holligan</li>
        <li>Wade Christensen</li>
        <li>Matt Krzyzynski</li>

    <script src="app.js"></script>
const $newStudent = $('<li> Sam Smith </li>');

Hi there! You are correct in that it should be the append method. However, there is also a problem in the <li> item that you're sending in. It contains two spaces that are not asked for.

You typed:

$('<li> Sam Smith </li>')

But the challenge asks for:

$('<li>Sam Smith</li>')
// Note the removal of the spaces on either side of Sam Smith

Hope this helps! :sparkles:

Thanks Jennifer for the help i was getting a bit blindsided. Looking to far as i was trying to append the element before its time. So first you select the element. then you add it to the dom.(document object model).
