List item loosing the width of the background?

Why does the list item loose the width of its white background, when position using the absolute positioning tool?

Is it possible the list item is displayed inline? Try changing it to block

If you change the position to absolute, the element is putted out of the normal document flow. This cause that the element width is set to his content.
