Locked Track Modules

So I was in the middle of a section when the newest change to tracks switched over last night and now it seems that you must unlock all previous sections in a track before beginning a new module.

I'm really not a fan of this though.

It was my point of view that tracks were there for those who wanted to follow a set development path from start to beginning, but they could skip sections they already were aware of or weren't interested in. From what I can tell this is no longer the case.

Is there a way to access these locked lessons or is the only way to go from the beginning of a track all the way though?

I'm not a fan either. Lock paths for kids in middle school or highschool.

I assume that you can still just look up the module you want to do in the Library section and just access it from there.

I was also in the middle of the section and had my tracks locked...I like the new track change but it will be more useful if you made an option for unlocking...

I completely agree. The new layout looks really nice, but locking sections doesn't really seem to have any practical application. I'm almost done with CSS Foundations, but I can no longer access it through the tracks until I complete 'How to Make a Website,' which wasn't even available when I started.

I can still access everything through the library, but that seems to defeat the purpose of locking it in the tracks.

Also, I enjoyed looking ahead through future sections to check out what I'd be learning down the road. Now I can't even see what the future sections contain without going through the library.

I understand that getting students to progress through material in a logical manner is probably beneficial, but they should still be able to skip around.

With that being said, Treehouse is still awesome!

I don't think it does to be honest. The tracks, although made up of the library courses are more like a complete learning set, whereas with the library you can pick from any course you see to have a go at. That's never been a secret from my experience in my short time here. :-)

I agree with you and I suppose it really isn't that big of a deal. Still, I just don't see how locking the content in Tracks improves the user experience.

Hah, I thought I had just not noticed that that was how the tracks were displayed to begin with or maybe found somewhere new.

I'm new to programming and I've only just discovered this site about two and a half days ago and when I clicked "Tracks" earlier and when I seen the new layout with the locks I just figured I had clicked something by accident. I didn't know they changed the site, but since I don't really know the old way it was and I have no knowledge in programming aside from what I've learned in the last 56 since stumbling upon the site or so hours I don't need to skip ahead or start in the middle of a track so the new layout doesn't bother me at all.

Tracks are a focused, on-rails experience meant for students that want or need structure. If we allow skipping again now, we're just going to take it away again in the future anyway. Using Tracks as a general curriculum guide, while helpful, is not ideal and I think what those students who want to go off track really want is actually functionality like a Playlist or Queue to forge their own path through Treehouse. So, we'll work on that!

from: The thread where the new tracks design was announced.

Personally, I'm a fan of the structure. The knowing what to do next without jumping into something a little more advanced that I would be ready for and wasting time trying to learn it while it could be made a lot easier had I learned the prior lessons first. On that note, the build your own track lesson queues sound like a rather amazing idea for anyone who learns better that way or for those who already have the skills and would like to refresh or test their memory in a more fluid manner than navigating the library each time you want a new video or test.

I think you are thinking of the home screen, as it shows every course you've worked on. Or did I miss something?

No, that was meant for those who want to jump around without following a specific track being able to queue up videos or lessons in the order they want instead of following directly along the set track paths like what you suggested without having to go into the library if you want videos in different orders.
