General Discussion

Mobile or Web Development?

Im new to Treehouse and plan on studying immensely as well as utilizing other resources and books. I plan on moving in the summer and would like to know what would be best for me to focus on that will create me income. I would love to create iOS apps and become a appreneur, but I do know that a web developer would be a great opportunity for me to get experience. Thanks in advance for your replies!

Hey Nicholas!

Before sharing my opinion on this, I think it's best to know if you already do have programming experience. I think it does play a role in deciding where to start.

If you don't have any programming experience, my opinion would be to start with web development. Here's why. With web development, with just front-end skills (HTML,CSS...) you could already build an advertising page. If you have extra knowledge like Python or Ruby and etc, you can create a powerful web app, and the sky is the limit.

If you have programming experience, then, the concept of programming is not very much daunting anymore, so you could consider doing mobile development. You'll just have to get familiar with the programming environment and syntax. And with the current tech industry, mobile is key, so it's great skill. But based on general feedback, mobile programming learning curve is steeper. Hence, web development might be a better place to start (especially without prior programming experience).

On top of that, with web development skills, you could for the time being use wrappers to create mobile apps, while learning on the side to build a native one.

Anyway, just my 2cents. =]

Thanks a lot Jason! You've helped a lot with my decision I have no prior programming experience so I believe I will start with web development.
