//Problem: User when clicking on image goes to a dead end
//Solution: Create an overlay with the large image - Lightbox
var $overlay = $('');
var $image = $("");
var $caption = $("");
//An image to overlay
$overlay.append($image);
//A caption to overlay
$overlay.append($caption);
//Add overlay
$("body").append($overlay);
//Capture the click event on a link to an image
$("#imageGallery a").click(function(event){
event.preventDefault();
var imageLocation = $(this).attr("href");
//Update overlay with the image linked in the link
$image.attr("src", imageLocation);
//Show the overlay.
$overlay.show();
//Get child's title attribute and set caption
var captionText = $(this).children("img").attr("???");
$caption.text(captionText);

If it's a case of your not sure what should go into var captionText = $(this).children("img").attr("???"); I would assume .attr is looking for an attribute of the image for your caption in which case the attribute would be title.
I'm still just learning JavaScript myself but as far as I can tell if you had
var captionText = $(this).children("img").attr("title");
it would take the value of the title attribute in the image tags and display that as your caption.
That's only assuming that is actually your issue but without further information it's difficult to help.
