Need some career direction advise.

Hey everyone,

I realise that this is quite a personal choice but wanted to get others views on my situation in the hope that someone had been through a simialr situaiton or had some advice to share.

I am currently working in Bangkok as a web developer and love my career choice. I am employed as a front end developer but the role has become more of a full stack as I manage the servers and write backend code.

Now I am moving back to the UK in 6 months and obviously will be looking to continue my career there. My predicament is which way to focus my energy. I am probably a better frontend developer but my passion is in backend technology. I basically want to know it all but realise that this is not possible and am worried that by continuing to focaus on both front and backend I will be spreading myself too thin.

Any help would be much appricicated.

Retagging this as Business. :)

A wise man once told us "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life" — Confucius

I partially agree with him.

We all know that even in the best case scenario, there are days that are not so good, and we will end up having a not so good time. There is also a slightly chance that you end up doing work you don't actually like, even if it is the field you love. There can be co-workers and even bosses that have a totally different view than you, and you might find it difficult to manage. If that happens and you see yourself stuck in a position where you can not move to another company, you will end up hating the work you love to do.

That is the one downside. Besides that, there are many bright sides, and I personally would embrace any chance of failing to work with something I really love to.

You today have a great understanding of frontend and backend development. What about in five years? Surely your knowledge will still be good, but we know that if we do not keep learning, somebody else is going to replace our position sooner or later. So, what are the chances of success in studying something that you love, compared to something that you are just good?

In most cases, we silly humans don't have enough motivation to do something we are not really comfortable doing. What am I saying is that it would be easier and painless to keep up with the field you love, compared to the field you are good with. Lets say your agency got a huge new client that will invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in a single website, but he wants a feature that nobody in your team is really good with. Your boss then will have to hire somebody to do it, but if you step up and say "look, I can take care of it." and you study the hell out of it, you will end up being that one asset your company knows it can rely on, and nowadays that is priceless.

Another thing will be your body language on a future job interview. You will find yourself more confident talking about it, you will probably smile when talking about projects that you worked on.

We are all into programming, so lets consider ourselves as variables. Everything I just said could apply for someone, but not you.

Life would be the most unexpected variable you will ever have to work with. I don't mind not having enough money to do something I want to if I have to wait for a position on the field I really love working, but I wouldn't put my wife or kids through my choice, or if ever somebody in my family needs medical care, if I just bought a new house and I am in huge debt, etc. So in case where there is somebody relying on me, or where I see myself any kind of these situations, I would have to swallow my job, my co-workers, my bosses, and there wouldn't be much I could do about it. Surely I would do the best I can and keep going, but working wouldn't be as enjoyable as would be, If I had a choice.

I hope you find your answer and have a really great future :)
