Next step

Hi everyone,

I've just finished the web design track except from SASS and Compass because i was having speed problems and was wondering what people would suggest i look at next in terms of web design and website design in particular?

If you could give me some links on what you think the best next step would be that would be great!

Thanks in advance!

I would suggest trying to make a decent site on your own. It's good to follow the tutorials, but you won't truly internalize what you've learned until you try to make something on your own. I suggest making a simple portfolio site for yourself or something similar. Just make sure it's nothing that's not way over your comfort zone, but is also a challenge.

I also suggest you plan on adding at least one component that was not explicitly shown to you in one of the tutorials and try to figure out how to do it on your own. Feel free to go back to tutorials for reference or look stuff up on the Internet, just make a point of not following the tutorials step-by-step.

I felt pretty confident of my skills and knowledge when I finished my first few tutorials and was kinda struck by how little I could do without referencing the tutorials again. Only after I worked on a couple sites on my own I truly felt like I understood the tutorials. And don't worry if your site ends up sucking. You can always iterate on it and fix things as time goes by. It's all about getting some solo practice.

Hi Nick,

Thanks for the reply!

Yeah i appreciate what your saying, i did have a go at making a small portfolio site by my self and did pretty well. I feel like i would benefit from watching some tutorials on using Photoshop with web design now and take my design skills to the next level.
