Not sure why this isn't working. I am getting a syntax error though, so I assume I must have missed something.

I think it must be in the beginning, near the "def..."

ruby.rb
def check_speed(car_speed)
  if (car_speed >= 40) && (car_speed <= 50)
    puts "safe"
  else
    puts "unsafe"

You are missing and "end" for your if statement. There should be two "ends", one for the method, one for the if-else logic.
