java.lang.NullPointerException: id == null

error after trying to run shortly after updateDisplay, initially I had an issue with Initiate MainActivity. I back tracked, and undid all the changes, and yet still theres an issue. I am just lost as to what may be the cause. I thought it was cause I somehow deleted the public lettering from the class statement.

I am not sure what is going on. If anyone could assist me that would help thanks!

Hello,

Could you provide the full output of the error message so that we can better assist you?

Hello,

I haven't gotten to look at everything yet, but what I believe is happening is by the time you call updateDisplay(), you have yet to assign mTimeZone for your currentWeather(or it was assigned null, meaning that it did not have the data did not exist to assign to it). I'll keep looking when I have more free time, but I hope that this might help focus your search as well.

I thought it might be regarding the mIcon variable, but I will dig into that as the debugger didn't allow me to look through step by step. Otherwise I might have seen that. Still learning how to use the debugger. Thank you so much for your assistance with this.

Regardless of the issues I encounter or how frustrated I may get TreeHouse is awesome.

THE ISSUE IS THIS BELOW CHANGING THIS SOLVED MY ISSUE

private CurrentWeather getCurrentDetails(String jsonData) throws JSONException {
        JSONObject forecast = new JSONObject(jsonData);
        String timezone = forecast.getString("timezone");
        Log.i(TAG, "From JSON: " + timezone);

        JSONObject currently = forecast.getJSONObject("currently");

        CurrentWeather currentWeather = new CurrentWeather();
        currentWeather.setHumidity(currently.getDouble("humidity"));
        currentWeather.setTime(currently.getLong("time"));
        currentWeather.setIcon(currently.getString("icon"));
        currentWeather.setPrecipChance(currently.getDouble("precipProbability"));
        currentWeather.setSummary(currently.getString("summary"));
        currentWeather.setTemperature(currently.getDouble("temperature"));
        currentWeather.setTimeZone(timezone);

        //Logs
        Log.d(TAG, "TEST: " + currentWeather.getTimeZone());
        Log.d(TAG, "TEST: " + currentWeather.getFormattedTime());

        return new CurrentWeather();

    }

Change :

    //Logs
        Log.d(TAG, "TEST: " + currentWeather.getTimeZone());
        Log.d(TAG, "TEST: " + currentWeather.getFormattedTime());

        return new CurrentWeather();

TO

    //Logs
        Log.d(TAG, "TEST: " + currentWeather.getTimeZone());
        Log.d(TAG, "TEST: " + currentWeather.getFormattedTime());

        return currentWeather;

return currentWeather; is what needed to be changed. I am honestly not sure why that this is the case. However, it was returning a null in the timezone code when i ran the debugger and the time zone was not null it was getting a string id, and a variable from jsonData. So I am still not sure why that fixed it, but I am glad i found it.

I realized finding solutions through treehouse forum search hasn't been successful due to their way of searching for a possible related question. Also related to the user's input and how the question is phrased.

definitely searching Google next time for answers to bugs in the code. Thank you for taking your time to help me get passed this so I could learn what to do better next time.

Glad that you were able to find the problem. Sorry I wasn't able to take a closer look right away at your code. If its not clear why that was causing the issue is that using the "new CurrentWeather()" command actually returns fresh CurrentWeather object that was ran through a default constructor and so none of the variables had any values to them. While returning "currentWeather" returns the variable currentWeather which you had initailized all of your variables for.

That makes perfect sense thank you! Much appreciated. You did help me understand why that had happened, and why it would have been null. So thank you!

I am not sure how to +1 this last comment but changing line 128 in MainActivity.java from

return newCurrentWeather();

to the suggested

 return currentWeather;

worked perfectly. Thank you for this piece of information and schooling. It actually taught me a lot with this error.

I am so grateful for this. I realise it's an old question but I've been searching for ages to fix the same problem. the Change from return new CurrentWeather();

to

return CurrentWeather;

has fixed my problem.
