I've been exploring a lot of courses here at Treehouse but always feel limited to using Workspaces especially when it comes to web development. I'm looking for an IDE i can use which we allow me to preview my work during coding sessions and provides support for many backend languages such as JS, Ruby and Python. I'm just starting out in the world of web development and was hoping I can use my skills more outside of the Workspaces environment. It'd be great if you guys could recommend an IDE that could fit my needs.

- Brackets - FREE - Favorite IDE(ish) application for front end developement. Support for all the front-end and most of the back-end web languages and it's free!
- Coda 2 - $$ - I hear about peopple using this one a lot. I have used the original Coda but have not tried Coda 2. People that use it swear by it though ($99)
- Sublime Text 2 - $ Favorite all around text editor well worth the small amount of money. Arguably the best text editor out there. It "supports" every language under the sun and has a price tag of ($70)
- BBEdit - $ This is an old School editor that still Doesn't Suck. If you want the free version you can follow the links on the page for BBEdit and download TextWrangler. BBEdit costs ($49)
Sublime and BBEdit like I said are just text editors. Sublime especially has a lot of plugins that make it very robust. These are great for coding in any language.
I didn't ask and you didn't tell what you are on (Windows or Mac) but what I listed above will work on Mac. Brackets and Sublime Text will work on Windows too.
Hope this help!

ps. If you are serious about development find an IDE/Text Editor or two that you like and pay the money to get a full unlocked copy of it. Most are pretty inexpensive, Don't be cheap! :)

I'll just add...Atom from Github is a cool little text editor, with a nice visual effect tied to the git repo the project is tracked by. Atom changes the file names color in the text editor so you know what's change, whats tracked, and what's not tracked since the last commit.
Also, I can't speak highly enough of Cloud 9

Totally forgot about Atom. :)
