Outsourcing design work?

So I feel like I am finally getting to a point where I can start to take on some freelance jobs. The problem is I am not a designer in any stretch of the word.

So I pose the question to you good people.

What is the best course of action for going about outsourcing the design work? I will do all of the coding myself. I just need to get someone to do the design work.

Do I go with an online service such as ODesk or eLance or do I look locally for individuals or small firms?

Or perhaps is my best course of action to buy a template and then make changes to it to satisfy the needs of my client?

Love to hear what some of you guys and gals do who are strictly developers. Also would love to hear from any designers that outsource coding work.

I'm a bigger fan of locally or modifying purchased themes. I generally do not like dealing with sites like ODesk, as you never know who you're going to get, and I hate relying on someone I can't easily go bug. If you were working with a local guy, you could track him down in person easier.

But that all depends on how big your market is. If you live in smaller, more rural areas that might not be so easy. If you live in a more urban area, look for a a design meetup and attend! Who knows, you'll probably learn a little bit of the walk and talk of design to make your life easier.

Sometimes purchased themes sucks, actually most of the time in my experience especially from sites like Theme forest etc. Your hopping into a land mine usually with not 1 unit tests. The free themes on WordPress.org usually have way higher quality code and are vetted by more developers.

Also one thing to consider is not all remote relationships are like ODesk. A lot of companies hire remote developers now and communication usually isn't hard with the tools available now days. Its really who you work with not how close you are to them in my opinion.
