Photoshop

does anybody have much experience as far as photo shop goes? I'm interested in getting it to help along with web design. Are there different kinds of Photoshop that i can purchase? any other recommendations?

If you're on a Mac, look into Sketch! It's gaining a lot of momentum, and it's great for working with web elements. I wouldn't recommend trying to edit photos with it thoughβ€”for that I would use Photoshop. But I'd much rather use Sketch than Photoshop for prototyping and building vector elements, and it's way cheaper.

A designer named Meng To put together an article on Sketch vs Photoshop that you might want to browse. I also recommend browsing the rest of his blog for inspiration, as well as insight into what can be done with Sketch.

I've been working with Photoshop and Illustrator for more than 10 years and for a view months now I'm using Sketch and Pixelmator. I've still got my PS installed (just in case) but Pixelmator has no problems with importing/exporting .psd files so far. It's of course a whole other story if you are into print design. In the CMYK field Pixelmator is no way a match for PS at this time but it's getting better ... but I don't really care because personally I'm not into print design and you too asked to use it along with web design :)

Great feedback, Holger Liesegang! I'm curious, what does your design workflow look like with both Sketch and Pixelmator? What do you use each of them for? Do you find yourself working with very specific things in one, or is there crossover?

At the moment I use Sketch mostly with layout, logo & graphics design for iPhone/iPad (like Sarah Parmenter ) and Pixelmator for the pixel world of course :-) The names of these two programs seem to really perfectly describe their purpose :) The good old (has it ever been good?) times of PS designing and slicing are long gone with the tables used for layout instead of CSS and as Adobe killed Fireworks, now Sketch with it's better exporting capabilities compared to PS is my choice of tool. I tested Acorn as well but I didn't like it as much as Pixelmator (perhaps because working with Pixelmator was way easier for somebody working with PS before as it is IMHO more similar to it than Acorn). Pixelmator can even work with vector graphics but I prefer using Sketch for that at the moment and I'm still impressed how fast Pixelmator works on my MBPr 15 compared to PS CS6.

For designing graphics for the web I like Adobe Fireworks, but it is being phased out. You can also try using GIMP the open source graphics program.
