231,269 PointsThis code requires JQuery. Are you sure that it is loaded?
You didn't snow your HTML (or CSS, for that matter) so I can't tell if it is.

e.preventDefault();
var imgSrc = $(this).attr('href');
var imgAlt = $(this).children("img").attr("alt");
$('.overlay').show();
$('.overlay').append("<img src='" + imgSrc + "'>");
$('.overlay').append("<p>" + imgAlt + "</p>");
});
$('.overlay').click(function () {
$(this).hide();
$('.overlay img').remove();
$('.overlay p').remove();
});
Create an overlay div at the beginning of your body (before everything else), and then try this code AFTER you make sure that you have the jQuery library included in your page. Let me know what happens.
