Planning my Learn to Build iPhone Apps Track

Hi all,

I wanted to share my plan for completing the Learn to Build iPhone Apps Track for a few reasons:

  1. I want to be held accountable by the community
  2. I want to share my process so that it may help others
  3. I would like some feedback so I can validate my process

I've seen some excellent posts and even Videos from other Treehouse users about how to plan for learning and I have attempted to implement their wisdom below:

Track

Learn to Build iPhone Apps

Goal - (Specific so that I know when it has been achieved i.e. not - 'I want to build iPhone apps')

Successfully implement my own design on iOS

Time

4 weeks, 4 days per week, 2 hours per day

Note: I had originally wanted to complete this in two weeks however after some quick calculations taking into account the total number of Videos, Quizzes and Code Challenges in the Track and the average video length, sufficient time to pause or go back over things I missed and time to work through difficult Code Challenges, I realised this was way too ambitious.

Project - (Very important for me to step outside of the Quizzes and Code Challenges and apply my learning to a real project)

Implement my Newsreader app design

Features:

  • Splash screen
  • Three slide walkthrough
  • Swipe to Save/Dismiss article
  • Pull JSON data + RSS
  • At least one custom UI element

When I Get Stuck - (I recognise that I am not always going to have the energy to persevere with every problem I face, therefore it is nice to have other 'learning distractions')

  • How to Freelance
  • Usability Foundations
  • Copyright Basics
  • Photoshop Foundations
  • How to Market Your Business
  • How to Start a Business
  • How to Build Your Business Through Blogging

So, there it is, I am starting today with my first 2 hour session and I will post some updates as I progress. As I mentioned I would love to get some feedback from the community and find out what processes you have found successful in your learning adventures.

All the best,

Hamish
