Progression

I'm going through the Web Design track at the moment which is a collection of some of the topics for HTML and CSS library courses on Treehouse.

This got me thinking.... do you tend to go straight through the track you're following as fast as you can, or do you take time out to take in what you're doing before moving through the stages.

I myself want to get through the design track as soon as possible and then follow other areas. Is this to the detriment of how much we learn?

Hey Jonathan Grieve.

It can differ between different people, people learn and pick stuff up differently. Therefore it really depends on you and what sort of learner you are.

Me personally i find it much better to Take it slower. This benefits me in a number of ways. It gives my brain more time to take in and absorb the information I'm being presented with, and allows me to understand it more. I also find that repetition can help as well, as common sense would tell you, the more time you do something, the more you will learn about it.

My personal way of learning might not be the best for you but try a few different methods like Going though it fast or Slowing down and see which gives you a better outcome.

Hope this helps! Scott.

Depends on the skill level as well, in my opinion anyway.

I came in here with a general knowledge of html and css and I kind of rushed through the html part and a few bits of the css, now I'm at a point where I'm learning things so I have it set to normal speed.

Hi Dylan Dixon and Scott Evans Thanks for your responses

Yes I think that's my plan too. I'm blitzing through the web design track and noting down "new" things as I go. I'll probably review a few of the videos before I move on to a new track but as you say, some people come into the site with at least some grounding on CSS and HTML.

Off I go now deep diving into Web Typography. ;)

I've been on Treehouse off and on since 2012 and started off (and continued for some time) going through things as quickly as possible. What I realized at some point is that I just wasn't retaining things very well (this became especially apparent when I got to more advanced CSS topics) and that rushing through was defeating my purpose, which was to actually learn something I could use in a meaningful way.

For me, Treehouse works best when I use the tracks/topics/individual courses as a starting point (rather than something I finish), then use other resources (books, blogs, other websites) to supplement and expand that material. Practicing the material is essential - I'm good at grasping the big picture presented in the videos, but then get bogged down when it comes to actually implementing something on my own. It's like learning an instrument, or a new sport, or a foreign language; you get better with repetition of fundamentals, which you can then use to build more advanced projects/use advanced techniques/etc.

As Scott said, what will work best for YOU may be different than what works for him, or me. Just be honest with yourself about your habits and learning style (so you can adapt your Treehouse activity accordingly), come to terms with spending some time doing tedious things (practice!), find some good supplemental materials, and above all, have fun!

Yea I think what I'll do for now is just continue to go through this track at the same pace in full knowledge that I can review anything I want, when I need it. I don't have too many problems taking in the videos which are fantastic but it's committing it to memory which has been the bigger problem the last few days. That said, I'm impressed with the Quiz questions which seem to me perfectly designed to reflect what you have learned, so if I make a clean sweep in the questions, I see that as I signed that I have taken in the things I need to for that stage.
