Project experience when not able to do tech degree

For some of us doing the tech degree just isn't financially feasible. I get the benefits though. Structured learning (not really something I need as I'm good at motivating myself) and experience doing projects especially.

But for those just doing the basic membership, how does one go about getting the experience of putting what they know to work? Something like making mock sites, etc.

Sorry if any of this is confusing. I worked nearly 16 hours and have been up close to 30 now. I just want a chance at a better future for myself and my family.

Hi there! I'd say it sort of depends on what you're aiming to make exactly or what kind of developing job you're going for. But I can give at least some tips.

Try codepen. It's entirely web-based and the basic account is free. You can experiment freely with HTML, CSS, and Javascript. I'm not sure how it works from a phone, but I've been known to sit and code a bit from time to time on my iPad.

If you're looking to make more advanced web applications with a backend you can try a PaaS (Platform as a Service). Heroku offers some free/cheap hosting and there's also Openshift which is by the same people who developed the Redhat distribution of Linux.

If you're looking to try some things just from your local system, you might look into the Wordpress courses here at Treehouse.

You might also find it beneficial to just play around with some front-end development. If that's the case, I can highly recommend the text editors Sublime Text, Notepad++, and Netbeans.

Hope some of this is helpful! :sparkles:

I may also suggest finding some additional coding communities (Reddit has some) to broaden your network, so to speak, as well as finding open source projects in which to contribute.
