Protecting Images

Hi All! Is there is a good way to keep people from taking images from your site? I am working on a basic portfolio site for an artist and she is very worried about people being able to copy images of her artwork from the page. Currently, all of the images are around the recommended 1024 x 768 size. Any recommendations?

Thanks!

Basically, any static content that is displayed on the browser can be easily downloaded, and there is no 100% safe way to protect them. Your best bet is to watermark the images.

You could add some basic techniques to make it harder to download the images, like disable right clicks, cloaking (add a transparent gif on top of the image) etc, but this won't stop someone who is determined to steal the image.

It makes sense to take a few steps to protect your images when you rely on them for your livelihood but remember that whatever measures you take, nothing will ultimately stop someone from stealing your content and photos if they really want to.

Don’t waste your time trying to achieve the impossible. It’s better to simply try and deter casual downloaders by making it more inconvenient to access your pictures.
